Selling your Indie Clothing Brand

A Short Guide to Selling your Indie Clothing

An Indie clothing designer is someone who designs and brands his or her fashion label independently from large corporations. It is a struggle, to say the least, to market these products surrounded by all the established fashion labels and designers out there. This article will give a short marketing guide to an Indie label owner.

Steps to Selling your Indie Clothing

First of all, you need to find a venue. That’s assuming that you make at least part of your products, though. Venues such as Etsy.com and flea markets are great places to start where you can sell your products and focus on making money off your indie clothing. Then, when you’re ready, the next step is setting up your own online shop. Setting up online shop is a lot cheaper than setting a physical shop. It does not mean that you cannot open your own physical shop at this point if you can.

Remember that you need to optimize your online shops. The most important of all is to take the best photo shoot as you can. Take your own pictures or hire a photographer if you have to. It is important that your pictures can spark the interest of your potential customers, and eventually draw them in enough to buy your product. Many consumers will skip over you if they cannot tell what they are looking at, whether it’s a Gucci bag for $5 or not.

You also need to optimize your website or shop for SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, whether you have an independent shop or a shop at an online venue. Since there are so many similar products, you want to make sure that the buyers will find your products first before the others. Each site has its own unique way to promote too and you need to learn the ins and outs of each online venue where you sell your indie clothing products.

Avoid putting all your eggs in one basket. You have to open a shop in more than one venue, online or otherwise. In real life, consider consignment with local boutiques. This can be done in many ways, too. Consider becoming an affiliate partner, or even a drop shipper with a well known company that supports Indie clothing designers.

Advertising your brand is also very important in your marketing effort. Find people who love to shop for Indie clothing. There are places that encourage Indie fashion designers and artisans to promote their products. You might also want to rent ad space in high ranking blogs or websites for Indie labels.

Designers of Indie Clothing

Best Indie Clothing Designers

Straight out of the basement, these Indie Clothing Designers really know how to put style into every one of their pieces! They are on the rise by not being a part of any big business or industrialized company, and this draws us all to them!

Top Four Indie Clothing Designers

1. Tulle

Tulle is a young contemporary woman’s collection focusing on hip, fashion forward trends at an affordable price point. With a mix of modern and vintage inspiration, Tulle offers great pieces for the creative, dreamy woman with just a little edge. Tulle is a unique side of indie clothing with a blend of effortless chic and glamor. Tulle combines fashion staples in cotton, canvas and wool blends with novelty pieces for a night out in silk blends, fun prints, and feminine textured fabrics.

2. Dahlia

Originating from the world of British bloaks, Dahlia started out selling their homemade designs at flea markets, but the quirky outlook of Dahlia quickly caught the attention of fashion devotees around the world. Not long after, Dahlia became more and more popular because of its playful personality and indie clothing style. Dahlia’s look embodies the modern British style with fashionable, cleverly cut pieces in fabulous fabrics, prints and bespoke detailing.

3. Dakota Collective

Since 2005 BB Dakota has been generating fast fashion for the contemporary customer. The look: citified prep, Americana with a quirky, feminine twist. The BB Dakota girl is glamorous, sophisticated, intelligent, at times demure, at times sexy, always feminine and always confident. Two years ago, a second brand, Jack BB Dakota, was launched in response to the demand for a contemporary and aspirational product for a slightly younger customer. Together, these two  indie clothing brands comprise the stable of brands now referred to as Dakota Collective.

4. Gentle Fawn

Talk about indie: Gentle fawn started out as a ceramic fawn antique collection. How it grew to a clothing line is beyond me, but at least the fawn still stands as the logo and symbol of the company’s beginnings and design inspiration. Gentle Fawn is a contemporary and imaginative line of indie clothing that speaks for people who follow their own paths in life. With a clean and modern style, Gentle Fawn stands out with details that give each piece of indie clothing distinctiveness. Overall aesthetic reflects a strong sense of fashionable edge, but never neglects the bit of charm that sets them apart from the rest.

Indie Style Becoming too Generalized?

Indie Style – A Blessing or a Curse?

When you think about Indie Style, what are the first things that come to mind? Are Tom’s, v-neck shirts, and Rastafarian beanies part of them? Well that’s my point. Straight off of wikipedia.com is the definition of Indie Style-called indie design there- “The indie design movement is made up of independent designers, artists and craftspeople who design and make a wide array of products without being part of large, industrialized businesses.” The whole part of Indie Style that attracts so many people is the fact that it is independent and doesn’t have a particular style. So even the word Indie Style is used in the wrong sense.

Getting Rid of the Indie Style Generalization

Even at the beginning stages of Indie Style, it will still take some time for people to stop calling themselves indie just because they’re wearing a shirt they bought from Etsy.com. Until you are an artist who stays far away from big business, you may not call yourself indie. You may support Indie Designers, or Indie Rock bands, but you do not have Indie Style. If we all follow these simple anti Indie Style rules, then we can get rid of this generalization.

-Instead of saying “I have such a great Indie Style” say “I love all things indie”

-Do not put bumper stickers on your prius that say “I am Indielicious”

-Stay away from those people who you can tell try too hard to be “Indie”. You associate yourself with them, and you may end up falling in their trap as well.

Indie Fashion Style Explodes in Popularity

From pre-teens to mid-twenties, fashion minded buyers are flocking to indie fashion.  Girls and guys seek out the indie fashion style as they define themselves through their clothing choices.

Indie Fashion Style Explodes

Teens and young adults are really flexing their consumer muscles.  Across the spectrum, it appears there is a youth frenzy in every portion of the creative industry. From music to art to fashion, people are going crazy for everything indie. Large established retailers like Tom’s to Nike are taking their cues from young designers.  Youthful consumers in urban centers are looking to be outfitted by exciting indie fashion style.

One exciting result of the emerging indie fashion style is that many indie fashion designers seem to be prospering.  With pictures in fashion magazines and popular shows like Project Runway, hot indie fashion designers are all the rage.

Indie Fashion World Tough on Designers

But for an indie fashion designer to break into the big time and make the big bucks, the designer must expertly manage his or her brand’s growth while juggling cash flow issues and a very fickle public.
